A 27-year-old woman and her two-year-old son died after their car caught fire near Phalida village in Greater Noida’s Ragupura on Sunday night, the police said on Monday. The woman’s father-in-law, who was also in the car, escaped with major injuries.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. on Rabupura Expressway connecting road when Madan Pal Singh was going to Faridabad with the duo. “The trio did not get enough time to escape as the fire spread quickly,” said Rabupura Station House Officer Rajveer Singh Chauhan.

A fire engine was sent to the spot which managed to douse the fire but the woman and the boy died. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Ms. Saroj’s family claimed the woman and her son were killed. The fire was planned since her father-in-law survived, they said.

“Her in-laws had been pressuring her family for dowry. They wanted money and a tractor. They tortured Saroj and taunted her over her son. This was a planned murder,” said Ms. Saroj’s relative.
