A 28-year-old woman, who was returning after dropping her children to school, was shot at by two men outside her house in Mahipalpur on Monday morning, the police said. They said that the two accused were accompanied by her husband.

Victim Kavita’s family alleged that their son-in-law, with whom their daughter has an estranged relationship for the past two years, threatened to kill her after she had approached the village panchayat with a complaint of torture against him.

The incident was reported at around 9 a.m. when Kavita was returning home in Mahipalpur village after dropping her children at a private school near her residence. She was allegedly waylaid in the lane outside her house.

Shot near her house

“The attackers whipped out a countrymade pistol and opened fire at Kavita. Kavita was shot on the shoulder and chest. She fell on the ground. Locals tried to chase the attackers but they threatened to shoot at them as well and managed to flee,” said a police officer.

The officer also said that she was rushed to a private hospital in Vasant Kunj by her relatives where doctors have kept her under observation at the intensive care unit.

“Kavita had married Ritesh Singh, a resident of Gurugram’s Islampur village in 2010. Ritesh used to be a property dealer then but later took to drugs. They have two children together. However, for the past two years the couple started having disputes between them. Kavita accused Ritesh of torturing her after returning home drunk. Last year, she returned to her Mahipalpur house and admitted her children to a private school,” the officer added.

The initial investigation found that the victim was attacked in the presence of her husband.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Ritesh and the two shooters at Vasant Kunj (North) police station. A search is on to nab the accused.
