A woman (34) was found dead at her residence in north-west Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh on Friday afternoon, the police said on Saturday.

Her husband was arrested after the victim’s parents alleged harassment for dowry, they said.

In-laws report suicide

The victim, Balwinder Kaur’s, in-laws claimed that she committed suicide, the police said, adding that they are waiting for the post-mortem reports. Her father Gurmeet Singh (64)said that she got married to Jaspal Singh in 2011 and the couple has two daughters. He alleged that Jaspal’s mother and sister started harassing and assaulting his daughter two months after marriage.

“They demanded money every now and then on the pretext of functions. They beat her up mercilessly. When we used to complain to Jaspal about this, he used to express his inability to say anything to his widowed mother and divorced sister,” Mr. Gurmeet said.

The victim’s family said they were informed about their daughter’s death around 1 p.m. They were told that she slipped in the washroom and died around 10.30 p.m. “When we reached, we found marks around her neck,” her father said, adding that they rushed her Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital where the doctors declared her dead. Mr. Gurmeet said they had approached the women’s cell in 2014 after which Jaspal and his family were counselled but the alleged harassment did not stop.

DCP (North-West) Aslam Khan said a case under Section 304B (dowry death) has been registered. “Statements of the victim’s family members has been recorded. Necessary action will be taken after the post-mortem report,” Ms. Khan said.
