The family members of Ravindra Kumar were visibly agitated on Monday as they accused the police of not being able to arrest the culprits who had beaten the e-rickshaw driver to death on Saturday.

The family has alleged that the police check CCTV footage for petty crimes and arrest criminals, but have been unable to identify the accused in this case. “They check CCTV cameras and pick us up for minor offences like drinking and small fights. But now, students have committed a murder and there is CCTV footage available from that afternoon, despite which the accused haven’t been identified,” said Pawan Kumar, Ravindra’s cousin.

The family also complained of CCTV cameras not being functional around the GTB Nagar metro station, which Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu also took note of on Monday.

A senior police officer said that they have been questioning people from a Delhi University college, which is where an e-rickshaw driver claimed to have dropped the two who threatened Ravindra on Saturday afternoon.

‘No hasty arrests’

BJP member from Timarpur, Surya Prakash, who visited the victim’s house on Monday, said the police had been asked not to make any hasty arrest because of political or societal pressure. “Just because there’s a lot of public anger doesn’t mean an innocent person is put behind bars,” said Mr. Prakash.
