Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Monday said he was secretly a “great fan” of former Chief Justice of India Y.K. Sabharwal for his precision and clarity of thought as a judge.
At the release of a book, titled Beyond the Name, Justice Y.K. Sabharwal , Justice Gogoi said the former CJI was a voracious reader and a prolific writer.
“His judicial decisions are exemplars of his courageous and fearless attitude when it came to upholding the rule of law,” Justice Gogoi said.
He remembered a case when Justice Sabharwal highlighted that question of infringement of fundamental rights cannot be academic questions. Justice A.K. Sikri, who is in the middle of a controversy over his proposed post-retirement assignment and nomination on the PM-led panel which removed Alok Verma as CBI chief, also shared his fond memories of Justice Sabharwal. He ended his speech quoting a portion from the book saying, “If you are hurt by little things, yours is still a little mind. Great and noble minds are not offended by petty things of daily life”.
Later, he refused to speak to the press over withdrawing himself to be appointed as the member of London-based Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT).
Attorney General and Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi remembered Justice Sabharwal as a “firm taskmaster” who was very popular with everyone.
Justice Sabharwal’s sons Chetan and Nitin, and his elder brother Jagmohan Sabharwal also spoke on the occasion.
