Up and About: Food and fun under Delhi’s winter sun

It is the season to explore global cuisines in the many events being hosted in the Capital

Lawns at Embassies, High Commissions and even public parks have been thrown open to Delhiites looking for a bit of fun in the winter sun. Judging from the hordes that visited these carnivals, youngsters are making the best of the weather to try out global cuisines that involves a bit of experimentation.

From crisp caterpillars at a stall in the Delhi Commonwealth Women’s International Bazaar and sizzling hot meats served straight from the grill to delectable desserts made with exotic fruits, the season has been a hunting ground for foodies on a quest for something new.

Annirudh Gupta, who spends most of his weekends prowling the lanes of Delhi for exciting food, says he waits for this time of the year as one gets to taste the best food from across the globe in a picturesque setting. “When you enter these carnivals held at parks and gardens, the sun is right above and hot. I usually visit with a bunch of friends so that we can nibble all day and try a number of dishes while sipping on a glass of chardonnay and watch the shadows grow longer.”

Even restaurants are cashing in on the weather with outdoor seating coming up at eateries with special menus for lunch.

Rakesh, a restaurant manager in Connaught Place, says the few tables that they have outside never find takers around the year. It is only when the restaurant is full that people sit outside and ask to be seated in the air conditioning as soon as possible. But now, the tables outside get filled first and they have more visitors during the day than at night.

Saloni, a fashion consultant, says instead of braving the cold and fog at night, it makes sense to go out during the day over the weekend instead of on a Saturday night when you can be more comfortable in the warm cozy confines of your home. “This is the beauty of Delhi as the change in season offers you different things to do and ensures that monotony does not set in.”
