The Delhi Police has questioned the authenticity of the video uploaded on social media in which two men have claimed responsibility for the attack on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwah said he cannot comment on the authenticity of the video till the accused are arrested.

“It could be a publicity stunt or an attempt to distract from the ongoing investigation in the case,” the officer said.

“The accused will be arrested soon. Our investigation is not based on the Internet. We are working on the ground to nab the accused. The two men who claimed to have executed the attack will be traced,” he added.

In the video, the two men, who identified themselves as Darwesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal, claimed the attack was supposed to be an “Independence Day gift” to Indians. They said they will surrender before the police on Friday.

The police are trying to trace the IP address from which the video was uploaded. Teams working on the case are already in Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.

A Special Cell team had on Wednesday recreated the crime at the spot.

They also recorded the statements of Mr. Khalid and other eyewitnesses in connection with the case.

The police had on Tuesday obtained CCTV camera footage from over nine locations.

CCTV grab

A CCTV grab showed a man walking and wiping his face with a handkerchief after allegedly attacking Mr. Khalid outside the Constitution Club on Monday afternoon, where the JNU student was to address an event.
