Two-year-old orphan hardly aware of loss

Couple had planned to take child to Vaishno Devi for the first time on March 12

The two-year-old son of Sumit and Ruchi Singhal is the sole survivor of a fatal accident, which claimed the lives of his parents and grandmother.

It was his cries that alerted officers that the child was alive, after which he was pulled out.

The child hardly knows that he has lost his parents.

His maternal aunt, Ruby, said that he has not been mingling with anyone but her. She said her paternal aunt has been crying since the incident and that ended up scaring the child a little.

Ms. Ruby said his parents had planned to take the child to Vaishno Devi for the first time on March 12.

“They wanted to visit Vaishno Devi to seek blessings for their son. It was going to be his first. The tickets had been booked,” she said.

The family also suspects that the boy might have been saved by his mother. Usually, the family recalled, he used to sit on his mother’s lap while travelling.

“We do not know how he was rescued from the back seat. She [the mother] might have gotten a chance to push him to the side. These questions will never be answered but we are happy that he escaped unhurt,” she said.

‘Spoke moments before’

Recalling the last conversation with her sister-in-law, 22-year-old Ekta Singhal said she had spoken to her minutes before the incident.

Bhabhi [Ruchi] had switched on the water motor before leaving for the wedding. She had called to tell me to switch it off around 12.30 a.m. I wanted to know when they would be reaching home and she said they were minutes away,” Ms. Ekta said.

When they did not return even after half an hour later, Ms. Ekta called again to check, only to be told by the police that they had met with an accident.
