Two men were stabbed to death in public by a mob comprising several young men on Tuesday evening at a market in Shalimar Bagh here, the police said on Wednesday. Nine people have been arrested in connection with the case so far, they said.

Victim Tanish Kwatra (23) was killed to avenge a one-day-old road rage incident, while Pawan Gupta (22), the other victim, was only an innocent bystander caught amidst goons brandishing knives, the police also said.

Aslam Khan, DCP (North-west) said that the main accused, Nikhil Sharma, and eight others have been arrested so far. There were around 15 people involved in the attack.

Mr. Sharma owns a motorcycle showroom in Shalimar Village. Both the deceased persons resided in Shalimar Bagh Block BH. Kwatra worked with a mobile company as a sales manager, while Gupta was a salesman at the IGI Airport. Kwatra and Mr. Sharma belonged to two separate local groups of youth, but they had not had a clash before Monday afternoon, when Kwatra’s scooty brushed past Mr. Sharma’s. The two had a fight over the issue and later Kwatra had called his friends and thrashed Mr. Sharma, the police also said.

Following this their mothers intervened into the matter and the two sides reached a compromise. However, Mr. Sharma wanted to take revenge. He called his friends and had a discussion on how to teach Kwatra a lesson.

Kwatra got a call from one of his friends around 8.30 p.m. on the day of the incident and left his house. He told his mother that he was going to settle the matter with Mr. Sharma.

“On the way he was surrounded by Mr. Sharma and his friends, who were allegedly carrying knives. The incident took place in a busy market. After he was attacked by the group of youth, he rushed inside a shop at the market. However, the attackers followed him and continued to stab him. None of the people present in the area intervened, but they informed the local police about the incident. The victim collapsed on the floor of a shop,” said Sudhir Singh, a local.

As the mob was breaking into the shop, Gupta, who had come to collect train tickets, managed to sneak out.

“One of the attackers stabbed Gupta, while brandishing their knives to prevent locals from intervening into the matter. Gupta was stabbed in the back. The injury was deep enough to puncture his lung. He succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday morning,” said a police officer.

A case of murder has been registered and the knife used in the crime has been seized. The case is under investigation. The police are trying to identify the roles of the other youths involved in the attack. They will also be arrested, said Ms. Khan.
