In two separate cases of police brutality, eight policemen were suspended and an SHO was sent to district lines over allegations of illegal detention and thrashing.

In the first case, a Head Constable and Constable posted with Sarita Vihar police station have been suspended for thrashing a civic body worker for not sweeping the police booth on Tuesday.

The police said that they received a PCR call at 11 a.m. stating that a civic body cleaner was beaten by two policemen for not cleaning the police booth at B Block of Sarita Vihar.

A group of civic body workers staged protest outside the police station and demanded action against the beat staff.

The Head Constable Sanjay and Constable Amit have been suspended, the police said, adding that no inquiry has been ordered.

In the second such case, a BJP worker’s son was illegally detained and thrashed by the officials of Rani Bagh police station on Sunday night, the police said on Tuesday.

After the initial inquiry, the SHO of Rani Bagh police station was sent to district police lines while six other policemen were placed under suspension.

The complainant Surendra Agarwal, a BJP worker and resident of Saraswati Vihar alleged that a team of policemen towed his scooty parked outside his house and took it to Rani Bagh police station.

Then, his son, Gaurav went to the police station to get back the two-wheeler. The policemen demanded ₹200 for the vehicle’s release, the complainant alleged. After this, Gaurav refused to pay the amount and they got into argument following which the policemen thrashed him.

“My younger son was asked to pay ₹200 for the scooty. He refused to pay saying that the vehicle was parked outside their own residence. The policemen abused him. When Gaurav asked them not to misbehave, they took him inside a room in police station and roughed him up,” Mr. Agarwal said.

‘Implicate false case’

The policemen also threatened to implicate his son in a false case of narcotics, he alleged. They snatched his mobile phone and when their elder son reached the police station searching his brother, he was also given the same treatment.

“The SHO has been sent to district lines and six other policemen including an assistant Sub-Inspector and five Constables have been suspended. A detailed investigation has been initiated in the case. No first information report [FIR] has been registered,” said Aslam Khan, DCP (North-West).
