Two robbers looting ₹40 lakh from an ATM on Tuesday ran out of luck as they fell from their motorcycle while trying to flee, the police said.

But, the drama did not end there as onlookers ran away with wads of currency notes scattered on the road.

Nanhe, from Bulandshahr district, has been arrested while his accomplice is on the run, the police said.

The incident took place at 1.30 p.m. when the custodians from a cash refilling agency reached the SBI ATM in Sector 82 to replenish the cash. As soon as the custodians moved out of the van to the ATM, two bike-borne men came, opened fire and snatched the bag containing ₹40 lakh cash, a police spokesperson said.

“While fleeing the spot, their speeding motorcycle rammed into another vehicle and the robbers fell down. At this point, the cash-filled bag was on the ground with wads of currency notes scattered on the road,” the spokesperson said.

Soon, passersby and locals rushed towards the duo when one of them fell into a drain while the other fired gunshots in the air to scare them, the official said. His partner, however, managed to flee the spot.

A bag containing ₹19.65 lakh was seized from him, the spokesperson said. “A pistol, two country-made guns, the bike and some ammunition have been recovered from him,” an officer said. Asked about the remaining money, a police official said, “The people present at the spot took away the notes that had scrambled on the road.”

An FIR under relevant sections of the IPC have been registered, the police said.
