A nine-month-old boy and a four-year-old girl succumbed to injuries they suffered after a cylinder blast in north-east Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area on October 11. The police have arrested a neighbour for stocking cylinders illegally, which led to the blast.

The accused, Santosh, lived in the same premises.

A senior police officer said that Santosh used to work in a gas agency from where he used to stock stolen cylinders.

On the day of the incident, he left one of the cylinders open. When the children’s mother Heena entered the kitchen to prepare food, the stove exploded injuring all four members of the family.

They were immediately taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. The boy succumbed to his injuries on Saturday while the girl died on Monday.

The relatives of the family staged a protest outside the gas agency on Sunday demanding action against those responsible.

The police are probing whether others were involved with Santosh in running the cylinder racket.
