Two persons, including an alleged kingpin of a trafficking racket, have been arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch for allegedly trying to sell a baby girl.
According to the police, the arrests were carried out at the instance of two more members of the trafficking racket who were arrested in the beginning of the month.
Acting on a tip-off that a gang involved in human trafficking is trying to sell a baby girl to a prospective buyer and one person would come near Vinayak Restaurant in East Jyoti Nagar on June 1 to strike a deal, the police laid a trap at the location.
“We sent a decoy customer to settle the deal for Rs.3 lakh and arrested a man and a woman identified as Sumit Sharma (28) and Niharika (26). We also rescued the baby girl, who they intended to sell,” said a senior police officer.
During investigations, it was purportedly revealed by Sumit and Niharika that the rescued baby was handed over to them by one Deenanath after which a hunt was launched to arrest Deenanath. The police finally arrested him on June 5. “We interrogated him and he told us he had procured the girl from her biological mother Rahisa Khatoon who sold her child as she was facing a financial crisis. Rabia, a resident of New Usmanpur had sealed the deal for Rs.75,000 and she, too, was arrested the following day,” said the officer.
