Two men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing a 29-year-old on Valmiki Jayanti, the police said on Friday. The accused allegedly shot Avinash Sangwan over his “vulgar” moves during a dance-off.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said Rishab and Chaitanya (21) allegedly shot Avinash in front of hundreds of people during a celebration on Mandir Marg on October 24. The incident was recorded on camera by several persons. The videos were obtained and analysed by the police, following which Avinash’s friends identified the accused.

“They identified the accused by face but did not have any clue regarding their identity. Photos of the accused were distributed across police stations. Rishab was finally arrested from Vijay Vihar. His counsin Chaitanya was arrested later,” Mr. Verma said.

Avinash, a resident of Lajpat Nagar’s Garhi, had come for the celebration with friends. They were dancing when Rishab challenged the group to a dance-off. Avinash accepted the challenge. “Rishab fought with Avinash over vulgar dance moves. He and Chaitanya got angry and decided to kill him. They left the spot but returned soon. Taking advantage of the crowd, they shot him and fled,” Mr. Verma said.
