Two cops injured in shootout

May 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - New Delhi:

Just six hours before the Delhi Police gunned down a white-collar criminal at a restaurant in Rajender Nagar on Saturday, another police team was involved in a shootout with a gang in North Delhi.

Two policemen received non-bullet injuries in the confrontation with the suspects whom the police alleged were on their way to commit a robbery in the Civil Lines area. All the four suspects were finally arrested.

“One of the suspects, Dhir Singh (33), is wanted for the rape of a minor girl in Vijay Vihar,” said a senior police officer. Deepak, another suspect, is said to be involved in a series of robberies at religious places.

The shootout occurred at 2:10 p.m. on Saturday after a Crime Branch team was tipped off about the gang’s plan to rob a large amount of cash from a car in Civil Lines. “A trap was laid at the expected place of the robbers’ arrival where a Maruti Celerio car was spotted and signalled to stop. The driver tried to speed away. They were finally intercepted at the Service Road on Yamuna Marg,” the officer said.

“One of the occupants of the vehicle, who later turned out to be Deepak, fired at us while the driver tried to run over some policemen. One head constable fired at the robbers in self-defence. The robbers were finally held,” the officer said. An inspector and a constable sustained injuries in their hands and chest and have been discharged after being administered medical aid.
