They snatched his 3 ATM cards, cash, damaged his phone

Three miscreants allegedly robbed and thrashed a man near west Delhi’s Peeragarhi on Monday on the pretext of giving him a lift, the police said on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Kedarnath, works with a private company. The assailants took snatched his three ATM cards and cash. They forced him to reveal his PINs and damaged his mobile phone before setting him free. They made multiple transactions using his ATM cards. When they exceeded the limit, they bought a liquor bottle worth ₹6,000 and a new phone.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj said a case has been registered and an investigation is under way. “We have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC. We are looking at footage from CCTV cameras,” she said, adding that the culprits will be arrested soon. The victim was waiting for a bus at a Punjabi Bagh bus stand when two men nearby asked him about his destination. When he told them he was headed to Peeragarhi, they claimed they were going in the same direction and offered to drop him. He accepted their offer and sat in the car.

After a while, the driver told the passengers that the car belonged to the government. He claimed its trunk was full of cash and it would be checked ahead. He asked the passengers for details of the cash or cards on their person. All men, including Kedarnath, complied.

The driver asked for their ATM PINs. At this, Kedarnath got suspicious and refused. Irked, the men assaulted and robbed him.

Kedarnath somehow managed to call his brother. After his brother arrived, they went to Punjabi Bagh police station. After the victim inserted his SIM card in his brother’s phone, he realised that multiple transactions had been made using cards.
