In an effort to make them people-friendly and prevent scuffles with the public during vehicle checking, the Delhi Traffic Police will conduct a special soft skills training programme for its policemen, a senior police officer said on Friday.

A traffic policeman had on Tuesday snatched and smashed the mobile phone of a car driver during an argument in Lutyens’ Delhi . The policeman has been sent to police lines till the enquiry ends.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Alok Kumar said traffic policemen on ground should remain calm and exercise restraint even if vehicle owners misbehave.

“If vehicle owners misbehave, traffic policemen should deal with the situation as per standard procedure and take legal action instead of getting into verbal arguments or fisticuffs,” Mr. Kumar said.

Stating that the programme will help traffic policemen become more professional, he hoped that they use the skills taught during the training. “We will take stringent action against policemen who violate instructions and get into fight with traffic violators. We are also procuring more body cameras for traffic policemen to keep a check on traffic offenders,” he added.
