Enhanced security for the official residences allotted to the MPs is understood to be on the cards after the issue of recurring thefts at the VIP enclave of New Delhi was broached in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to take action on stepping up security for the MPs after Sudip Bandopadhyay, TMC MP from Kolkata North, complained about three break-ins in as many months, followed by burglaries, to her.

Mr. Bandopadhyay apparently walked in on a burglar even as the latter went about ransacking his residence at 1b, Maulana Azad Road, on Wednesday evening following which senior police officials, including the Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Range), were summoned to the spot.

“My bungalow is…located at the junction of Janpath and Maulana Azad Road. As we all know 10 Janpath is a very important place in the country…In the last three months three thefts have taken place in my bungalow,” he said.

“The first theft was on March 7, 2015, then again on March 9, and the third on May 6,” he said.

According to the MP, the “thief” in question was stealing his computer when he caught him red-handed.

The MP said, “I do not know why theft is taking place in such an area repeatedly. The place comes under the the Tughlaq Road police station. I would request the honourable Home Minister to take action in the matter.”

A senior police officer told The Hindu that the accused had been caught from the crime scene and was in the process of being identified.

Ms. Mahajan asked Mr. Singh to take cognisance of the matter to which the latter said he would speak to Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi in this regard.
