Tihar staffers fired for sneaking in items

The Tihar prison administration on Monday terminated the services of four staffers for allegedly participating in the smuggling of banned items inside the jail.

“Director-General (Prisons) Alok Kumar Verma issued orders dismissing assistant jail superintendent Vinay Prakash and warders Ajay, Raju Pandey and Rakesh for their role in smuggling of banned items inside the jail on the intervening night of September 1-2,” said Additional Inspector General and Tihar jail PRO Mukesh Prasad.

All four were found involved in the throwing of a sock stuffed with mobile phones, chargers and tobacco inside the prison from outside the boundary wall of the jail.

Ajay was caught in the act by a CCTV camera, while the rest were found guilty of facilitating him. The recordings were later found erased, the AIG said. Action was taken against them after an enquiry by the superintendent of jail no. 8 and 9. Termination orders were issued after the findings of the probe held them guilty, Mr. Prasad said. — PTI
