The Gramin Sewa tempo driver who was thrashed by cops after he brandished a sword in Mukherjee Nagar has a criminal case registered against him and preventive action has been taken against him twice, the police said on Tuesday.

A senior police officer said that an FIR was registered against driver Sarabjeet Singh in April 2019, at Parliament Street police station on charges of causing hurt, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation.

The complaint was submitted by a helper at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib who alleged that Singh and his son were staying in the gurdwara for three-four days and when the helper questioned him on his whereabouts, he got agitated and thrashed the helper. “Singh was arrested and bailed out in the case,” the officer said.

In 2006, his wife approached the police complaining that he beats her and abuses her after which he was detained in Burari. No FIR was registered in the matter.

In 2011, he was detained along with a few others after creating ruckus in Timarpur. “A Daily Diary entry was made where it’s mentioned that Singh became aggressive when the police tried to control him. He and a few others were detained under 107/151 Criminal Procedure Code,” the office said.

The Delhi Police also submitted the report to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the incident. “The report has been submitted. The case is now being investigated by Crime Branch. No arrests have been made so far,” the officer said.

AAP writes to top cop

Meanwhile, members of the AAP autorickshaw wing in a letter to Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik said that there have been many incidents of police misbehaving with auto drivers and beating them up. They urged him to ensure their safety.

“We request you to do something for the safety of auto drivers in Delhi... And the police officers who attacked Sarabjeet, strict action should be taken against them so that no police officer repeats it in the future,” the letter read. The representatives went to the police headquarters in ITO. The letter stated that there was a sense of fear among the auto drivers after the incident.

A video of the incident went viral. The police, on Monday, registered cross FIRs in the matter; one against Singh and another against the police officers. Three officers were also suspended for their unprofessional conduct.
