Teenager drowns at water park

June 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - New Delhi:

A 19-year-old drowned in the swimming pool of a prominent water park in North-West Delhi on Wednesday. He was accompanied by five friends, the police said.

Gagandeep Singh allegedly did not know how to swim and was declared brought dead at the hospital, according to the police.

“Gagandeep had gone to the water park with his friends. The incident was reported around 1.30 p.m. The group claims to have informed the pool’s lifeguard that they did not know how to swim properly. This claim is being verified,” said a senior police officer.

According to the police, the others failed to realise that Gagandeep had drowned. They sensed something was amiss when they exited the pool but he was nowhere to be found.

According to one of them, no lifeguard was on duty when they returned to the pool.

Though Gagandeep was taken out from the deep end, no CPR was performed.

The police added: “He was taken to the hospital in a vehicle provided by the water park authorities. He was declared brought dead. On the basis of the friend’s statement, a case under Section 304-A [causing death by negligence] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Alipur police station and investigations are underway.”

On May 22, 13-year-old Vishwas Nagar resident Mukul Sharma had died in the presence of two lifeguards at Babu Ram Government Higher Secondary School.
