An 18-year-old youth, his mother and sister have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping their neighbour’s three-year-old son in outer north Delhi’s Bawana, the police said on Monday.

DCP (Outer) Gaurav Sharma said that the accused have been identified as Dhruv, his 21-year-old sister and 40-year-old mother, who allegedly kidnapped the boy for money. Dhruv’s sister’s marriage had been fixed but due to lack of money it was called off. He planned to kidnap the son of his neighbour, who deals in the sale and purchase of second-hand cars and was financially sound, the police said.

The police said that around 1 p.m. on Sunday, the boy’s father reported him missing after which a kidnapping case was registered. During investigation, CCTV footage was examined and suspicious movement of a vehicle was found. “It was revealed that Dhruv, who stayed on rent in the same area, owned the vehicle. He was, however, shifting to a new place. On the day of incident, the victim and other two children were offered cold drink by Dhruv,” Mr. Sharma said, adding that Dhruv was then brought for interrogation.

The police said that when his phone record was scanned, they found that Dhruv had made several calls to the complainant, who, however, could not identify the number, as he was not acquainted with the accused. “Later, the victim’s pictures were also found in Dhruv’s phone. Besides, three audio recordings were found, in which, he was demanding ₹75 lakh from the complainant as ransom,” Mr. Sharma said, adding that the calls were made while an investigation was under way and that the complainant had informed police about them.

Dhruv, who confessed to having kidnapped the boy, said that he had planned the crime with his mother and sister in order to arrange money for the sister’s marriage. After kidnapping the victim, they took him to their rented accommodation in Daryapur and tied him. The boy was recovered from the location and the accused were arrested.

The police also said that Dhruv had recorded his voice by modulating it before sending the same to the complainant on WhatsApp. He said he was motivated by a crime TV show.
