Multiple students’ organisations came together on Monday to protest the planned construction of a 39-storey building by a private organisation, at Delhi University’s North Campus.

The proposed construction has been opposed by multiple stakeholders at the university, including the teachers and the students’ unions, independent students groups and the university administration.

During the university’s 96th convocation ceremony held on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor made a reference to the illegality of the construction, citing the Master Plan of Delhi 2021, which restricts high-rise buildings in the university’s vicinity.

The construction of the building poses a risk to the privacy of the four girls hostels in its vicinity, the students’ groups said in a statement. It would also effect the cultural resources and the environment of the area, they added.
