Street vendors threaten stir

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - NEW DELHI:

An association of street vendors has threatened to protest against the civic bodies for the delay in allotting licences to hawkers.

The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) said in statement on Friday that its members will “lock the gates of all the municipal bodies in Delhi on January 20”.

According to NASVI, the municipal corporations have not fully implemented the Street Vendors Act, 2014, and have not given licences to hawkers in a decade.

NASVI national coordinator Arbind Singh said: “Street vendors are left with no option but to protest at municipal offices in Delhi.” While Town Vending Committees were set up, as per the Act, the scheme to relocate the vendors, identify the spots and allot the licences has been delayed.

Y.S. Mann, the spokesperson of the North and East Delhi corporations, said the process to formulate the scheme was on. “The Delhi Government notified the rules on November 26, 2014. All the civic bodies are working together to come up with a relocation scheme and conduct a survey,” said Mr. Mann.
