Sonipat gangrape case: two cops suspended

Action over ‘inept handling of case’

Two Assistant Sub-Inspectors have been suspended and a Station House Officer sent to police lines for alleged inept handling of the case pertaining to the gang-rape and brutal murder of a young Dalit woman in Sonipat a week ago.

Superintendent of Police, Sonipat, Ashwin Shenvi, said that ASI Joginder, posted at City Police Station, Sonipat was suspended for alleged lapses on his part in dealing with the victim's complaints of harassment against the prime accused, Sumit, a couple of months before the murder and gang-rape took place. Another ASI Samundar, posted at Urban Estate Police Station, Rohtak has been suspended for allegedly not conducting inquest proceedings professionally into the death of the victim, whose body found was in a vacant plot in Industrial Model Township in the district.

No clean chit for accused

City Police Station, Sonipat, SHO, Sub-Inspector Ajay Malik, has been sent to police lines for failing to ensure proper handling of the complaints by the victim. “He is the SHO and therefore held responsible for failing to satisfactorily discharge his duty,” said Mr. Shenvi.He said there was no evidence against the six persons named by the family, but none of them was given the clean chit as yet.
