To give a better life to his family, Umesh Sharma had sold his house in Kotla Mubarakpur and bought a small house in Sangam Vihar so that he could buy a cab.

The victim’s wife, Geeta, has been inconsolable ever since she got a phone call at 1.30 a.m. informing her about the incident. “The killers have not only killed my husband but they have killed me and my three children also. He was the sole breadwinner of the family. Now who will take care of my children,” asked Geeta.

Neighbours said Umesh was a good man who never picked any fights with anyone. He used to leave early and come late everyday after driving the cab, they said.

Bought cab on loan

Surendra Sharma, the victim’s cousin, said Umesh had bought the cab after the birth of his third child around 18 months ago.

He bought the cab on loan and got his children admitted to a good school. “Umesh used to say ‘I am driving a cab because I was educated only till Class VIII but my kids will not live like me. I will compromise with less space in the house but not with my kids’ education’,” said Surendra.

While neighbour women tried to console Geeta and her eldest daughter, who is just seven years old, Umesh’s five-year-old son kept asking why his mother was crying and why ‘papa’ has not come back.

“Umesh use to take the kids in the neighbourhood on a ride in his cab on Sundays. We never expected that one day he would not return. We demand strict punishment for his murderers and hope the government will assist the family and the children,” said Usha Singh, a neighbour.
