He wanted me to become a doctor,” said an inconsolable 13-year-old Akshita. The youngest daughter of Constable Sawarkar Prahlad Ramrao, who died in a road accident at Kalindi Kunj on Sunday, had come with the family to receive her father’s body at the AIIMS mortuary.
Ramrao and his senior colleague Assistant Sub-inspector Nagender Pal Singh were run over by a vehicle driven by a drunk man in the early hours of Sunday.
Besides his immediate family, which includes his wife Aruna (40) and another daughter Pragati (17), the deceased constable is survived by his 75-year-old mother Seeta Bai. A resident of Parbhani in Maharashtra, Ramrao had joined the Delhi Police in 1994.
He had served at various units before being transferred to the Jaitpur police station, which turned out to be his last posting.
Also present at the mortuary were the family members of ASI Singh who demanded the strictest possible punishment for the accused driver.
His father Chhote Lal told The Hindu that law should take its course and ensure that the errant driver who caused his son’s untimely death by driving under the influence of alcohol should not get away with a lighter punishment.
Singh is survived by wife Savita Devi and sons Vipin (25) and Praveen (21). Mr. Lal was accompanied by his elder grandson at the mortuary.
Singh’s children are studying in Aligarh. He had joined the force as a constable in 1982 when he was 20 years old and was promoted twice to rise to the post of an ASI. While Singh was cremated in the Capital on Sunday, Ramrao’s body was later flown to his native Maharashtra where his last rites are expected to be performed a day later.
