SIT probe in anti-Sikh riots delayed: DSGMC

: Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Saturday said it was “pained and dismayed” over the delay in justice and compensation to the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh genocide by the Government of India and the Government of Delhi.

DSGMC president Manjit Singh G.K. said families of those who were “killed in the most brutal manner” in the riots were losing hope that they will ever get justice.

Mr Singh was reacting to reports which said that despite recommendations of the Union Home Ministry for setting up of a special investigation team (SIT) headed by IPS officer Pramod Asthana two months ago, the Delhi Government led by Arvind Kejriwal had not provided adequate staff for the SIT. “This shows that there was lot difference between promises made by the Delhi Government and execution of those promises,” he said.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Delhi Government, however, had refuted “false and mischievous reports” that it had “not provided logistics and manpower to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots”. “For the first time on May 1, in a meeting held in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the Delhi government was informed about the requirement of a public prosecutor for the SIT.

“The Delhi Government has already prepared a list of public prosecutors to be sent to the MHA. The MHA has only sought the name of public prosecutors from the Delhi government for the SIT and nothing else. All other speculation is completely baseless,” the government said in a statement.

DSGMC president, however, said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had made it a political issue before the Delhi Assembly polls and the General elections insisting that he had sent recommendations for setting up of a SIT to the Union Home Minister during the tenure of his previous government of 49 days.
