Sharda University on Monday suspended two students for allegedly thrashing a group of foreign students on campus on October 1 and 6.

The police said local students from different areas of Greater Noida were involved in the brawl.

A list of foreign students involved will be shared with their respective Embassies. The university will hold a meeting to decide whether more students need to be suspended.

The university has announced a press conference on Tuesday.

The police had earlier booked right-wing activists Deepak Sharma and Ved Nagar for rioting and instigating students. The duo is accused of making inflammatory statements on campus and posting videos on social media.

Preliminary investigation had suggested the role of ‘outsiders’ in escalating the tension between student on the basis of faith and nationality.

About 350 students were booked by Knowledge Park police for rioting on October 6, following a ruckus on campus while demanding the ouster of students from Afghanistan. The brawl had begun on October 1, when Indian and Afghan students clashed over a “petty” issue.

The university management suspended three Afghan students and sent show cause notices to 10 other students in the case.

Meanwhile, a WhatsApp group created to gather support for protests against Afghan students has been disbanded.
