Two senior managers of a restaurant in west Delhi have been arrested in connection with the death of two housekeeping staff, the police said on Sunday.
On March 23, two employees of ‘Pirates of Grill’ restaurant in Rajouri Garden died allegedly due to asphyxiation while cleaning its sewage treatment plant.
Rakesh (45) and Ajay (19) died, while two of their colleagues — Pankaj and Raju — had to be hospitalised, the police said.
DCP (West) Monika Bhardwaj said that they have arrested Pirates Of Grill’s area manager Pankaj Kumar and unit manager Aftab in connection with the case that was registered under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and the SC/ST Act.
Ms. Bhardwaj said that during investigation, it was found that the arrested persons were also the supervisory officers of the staffers at the restaurants.
“They were the ones who were responsible for the safety and security of the staff. They should have provided safety gear to the housekeeping staff before allowing them to enter the basement. None of the four workers were provided any safety equipment before being sent to the plant,” said Mr. Bhardwaj.
Ms. Bhardwaj said that they have also summoned the restaurant owners to join the probe.
“We are trying to find out criminal liability of the owners. If any liability is found, then more names will be added in the FIR,” she said.
On Sunday afternoon, around 50 people, including relatives of the four workers, staged a protest outside Rajouri Garden police station, demanding compensation.
They also demanded action against the restaurant owners for neglecting workers’ safety.
