Six people died and 16 were severely injured after a major fire broke out in South East Delhi’s Zakir Nagar area in the early hours of Tuesday.

A senior fire official said the five storey building caught fire after a spark in the electricity meter board. The call was made around 2.20 a.m. after which five fire tenders were pressed into service. “One woman jumped from the second floor and a body was recovered from the third floor,” the official said.

The fire department said that 16 people, including two firemen, were injured; some of them critically. About 10-15 vehicles were also damaged in the incident, the department added.
