A 55-year-old security guard was accidentally beheaded by an excavator machine at Jahangirpuri here on Sunday morning.
Incidentally, the victim Mansoor Beig was deployed to ensure that no one gets harmed while the machine was being operated.
On the other hand, the machine operator did not realise that he killed Beig till someone raised an alarm. He fled from the spot as soon as he came to know of it.
This triggered strong reaction from angry locals who protested at the accident site. According to the police, Beig was taking a walk at the spot, a large landfill site, around 7-30 a.m. when he came dangerously close to the excavator. At that very moment he slipped, lost his balance and fell down, said the police.
During the fall, his neck came in contact with the machine and was chopped off.
The security guard and the excavator machine were employed by the municipal corporation.
“One of the labourers working there noticed the accident and raised an alarm,” said a police officer.
The labourers present at the spot carried the torso out of the landfill and informed the police. However, it took almost an hour for the police and the labourers to find and dig out the head from the heap of mud.
The machine operator remained untraceable till late Sunday evening. The officer added that the accused faces charges of causing death by negligence and negligent conduct with respect to machinery under the Indian Penal Code.
The vehicle was seized and the body sent for post-mortem. His body was then handed over to his family that lives at G-Block slum in Jahangirpuri.
Beig had been working as a security guard at the site for the past five years.
During the protest, which followed the incident, some even pelted stones. The situation was brought under control later.
