343 challans issued to violators, says municipal corporation

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) undertook a special sanitation drive to check littering in 167 markets in its jurisdiction on Thursday.

As part of the drive, which was aimed at making people aware of the consequences of littering, sanitation workers cleared garbage from 57 markets in West Zone, 32 in Central Zone, 28 in Nazafgarh Zone and 50 in South Zone, the corporation said in a statement. Major markets where the drive was conducted included Nehru Place, Amar Colony, Jangpura, Sector 4 Dwarka and Sector 10 Dwarka market. As part of the drive, 343 challans were also issued to violators for littering, the corporation said in a statement. It added that the violators would have to present themselves before the Local Magistrate which will decide their liability.

This comes as part of special “theme-based sanitation drives” that Commissioner Puneet Goel has directed the Department of Environmental Services to undertake daily. They are expected to help the corporation improve its ‘Swachhta Ranking’. Prior to this, the corporation had undertaken sanitation drives which focused on cleaning religious places and also on air and dust pollution.
