Saying yes to home composting

June 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - NEW DELHI:

De-centralising waste management could well be the way forward with the Delhi Government in collaboration with the Residents Welfare Associations and global think-tank Development Alternatives piloting “installing household composters to recycle their biodegradable waste into compost in just 60 days.”

The project will begin in E-block of Saraswati Vihar, Pitampura and will encompass 40 households. Development Alternatives (DA) vice president Zeenat Niazi said: “Almost 50 per cent of the waste generated in Delhi is biodegradable, which can be recycled.”

She adds that one of the ways to reduce the ‘burden of the biodegradable waste is through ‘home composting’ which is one of the means of decentralized waste management.

“Home composting can contribute towards ‘Zero Waste’ societies which are fast becoming the norm in the world. They not only make our home clean and eco-friendly, they also keep our streets and cities clean,’’ she noted.
