SAHMAT remembers Gandhiji

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The 67{+t}{+h}anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination was commemorated with a “secular cultural festival” on Friday. The Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) organised a series of events to mark the day the Father of the Nation was shot by Nathuram Godse.

According to a SAHMAT statement, a black badge marking the time and date of his martyrdom (5.17 p.m. on January 30, 1948) was designed. It was worn as activists and students observed a moment of silence.

At Jawaharlal Nehru University, a lecture was held by Professor Irfan Habib on “Gandhi’s finest hour”. Street play, songs, short speeches, a book release and mass mailing of Gandhiji postcards was conducted.

The postcards carry different artists’ images of Gandhiji on one side and his words on religious fundamentalism on the other.
