Repair work was going on in the over two-decade-old building

Two people were killed and two others injured when the roof of an old building collapsed on them at Sonia Vihar in North-East Delhi on Saturday.

Repair work had been going on in the building, which is reportedly over two-decade-old.

The deceased have been identified as Sunita Beniwal (40), the owner of the house where the incident took place, and Vijay (35), a labourer.

According to the police, the incident took place around 4.20 p.m. in Pocket-6 of Sonia Vihar. A PCR team rushed to the spot after receiving the call and the injured persons were taken to a hospital nearby.

“Two persons succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, while the others are receiving treatment,” said a police officer.

Sunita had started repair work in the house as it was an old construction. She had gone to serve tea to the labourers working in the house when the incident took place.

“We received a complaint on Saturday around 5.30 p.m. that a building had collapsed in Sonia Vihar. The site was inspected by the junior engineer of the area,” said East Delhi Municipal Corporation Chairman Y.S. Mann.

“Two executive engineers will conduct an inquiry into the incident and submit a report within 72 hours,” said Mr. Mann.
