Arrested accused Ombir Singh and Jagdish Kumar.

Timely intervention by the Special Cell on Thursday allegedly saved an elderly couple who reside in central Delhi from getting robbed and an eyewitness from getting killed.

Two men, identified as Ombir Singh and Jagdish Kumar, were allegedly planning to target both the couple and the eyewitness in a murder case. They were arrested on Thursday, the police said.

“We have seized two pistols and four live cartridges from their possession,” said a police officer.

A Special Cell team received a tip-off that Jagdish’s brother-in-law Pawan, who is lodged in jail, and Ombir were planning the robbery and murder.

Pawan is an accused in a double murder case registered at Rajendera Nagar police station, while Ombir, who was earlier lodged in Rohini jail, is involved in several cases, including murder and robbery. Pawan and Ombir chalked out the plan and roped in Jagdish and other accomplices. Pawan, who worked as a driver in a central Delhi for nearly five years, had observed that the elderly couple living there were financially well-off, and owned pharmaceutical companies and factories.

Parole

“On June 6, Ombir was released on seven-day parole. He asked Paramjeet to contact Jagdish and identify the houses of both the couple as well as the eyewitness. On June 9, Paramjeet came to Delhi and stayed at Jagdish’s house. Both of them gathered the information the next day itself,” said DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Kumar Kushwah.

“Ombir decided to commit the crimes in the small hours of June 13 so that he could surrender after getting his share of the booty. However, they were arrested from Delhi Cantonment before they could execute the plan,” Mr. Kushwah said.

Ombir told the police that he started his career as a security guard in societies in Dwarka and started committing robberies there. He was arrested for attempting to kill one of his accomplices over sharing of looted booty.

On the other hand, Pawan is serving a jail term in a double murder case. Jagdish visited him there regularly. During one such visit, Pawan asked him for help to get an eyewitness in the case eliminated if he did not agree to turn hostile. Pawan also told Jagdish that he required funds to execute the plan.

“Pawan asked him to check whether the couple still lived in the area. On Pawan’s direction, Jagdish carried out a recce of the house for a few days. He found that the couple still lived alone in the house and that they were financially well-off. He also came to know that the couple had recently sold some property. The accused thought they could loot the money,”he said.
