A plea claiming an increase in air pollution due to encroachments in Azadpur has led the National Green Tribunal to direct the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to file its response within a week.

‘Last chance’

A Bench headed by NGT Acting Chairperson Jawad Rahim, which had issued notices to the State government and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), on May 1, granted a “last chance” to the civic body after it sought further time.

Earlier, the green panel had asked the Aam Aadmi Party government and other authorities to show cause why the order passed by the Public Grievance Commission had not been complied with regard to the encroachments.

The plea

The directions came while the green panel was hearing a plea filed by Delhi residents Sushil Baheti and Ritesh Goel who had sought removal of encroachments from Azadpur.

The plea had also sought directions to the DPCC to install ambient air quality monitoring stations in the area.

“It is pertinent to mention herein that the grievances commission observed that the issue of encroachment at Azadpur is a very chronic matter that needs to be resolved and advised to approach the tribunal or getting corrective orders to resolve the grievance” read the plea.
