A shocking footage has surfaced of a 26-year-old woman, who jumped off the first floor of a building in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar to escape five men who allegedly raped her, walking nude on the road and begging for help from locals.
All 5 accused held
All five accused in the case have been arrested. While four of the accused — Lakshay Bhalla, Vikas Kumar, Naveen, and Prateek — work in call centres in Noida, the fifth — Swarit — is an engineer with Tech Mahindra.
The woman who helped the victim after many passersby ignored her cries has been identified as Munni Devi. She said that at 5.40 a.m. she saw the woman walking nude on the street and begging for help. She immediately threw a shirt and pyjama towards her from her balcony.
An auto driver who was passing by stopped and offered his clothes to the woman. He also gave her a mobile phone to call the police.
Fall from building
This has been captured in the 17-second-long video clip, which shows many people standing by and watching the woman, but not offering help. Before the woman is seen, the footage shows two men standing outside a building and looking towards the higher floors gesturing with their hands in a manner that suggests that they were discouraging her from jumping.
The footage also shows the woman falling from the building and landing on the stairs. One of the men helped her to her feet before she is seen seeking help from passersby. The footage also shows the woman eventually taking an auto rickshaw and trying to leave the area.
One of the accused had informed the police about the incident. A police team arrived as the woman was leaving and rushed her to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for medical treatment as she injured her legs in the fall.
She purportedly told the police that the five men beat her and confined her in their flat. She also said that she was forced to consume alcohol before they took turns to rape her. The police said the woman jumped off the building to escape torture.
