Purana Quila lake: NBCC response sought

Following a plea seeking directions to restore the Purana Quila lake, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday sought responses from the NBCC.

A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the NBCC to submit a report by September 24.

The plea filed by city resident R.K. Gupta alleged that the project to revive the lake had been undertaken in a manner having adverse environmental impacts.

“The ASI and NBCC should have noted that the Old Fort lake in its old form was unlined adding considerably to the groundwater recharge round the year in the area and declared as critical by the Central Ground Water Board,” the plea alleged. It further alleged that the process of concretisation and laying down of sheets will damage the lake. It sought directions to restore the lake to its natural condition by removing impermeable plastic lining on the lake.
