Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday sought Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intervention in the incident where a tempo driver and his minor son were allegedly assaulted by police in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar on Sunday.
Capt. Amarinder tweeted: “Shameful incident of @DelhiPolice ruthlessly beating up Sarabjeet Singh & Balwant Singh over a petty issue. Request HM @AmitShah to ensure justice [sic].”
AAP in Punjab has also criticised the Delhi police’s act of beating the Sikh auto driver and his son and termed it as an “act of sacrilege”.
In a joint statement, party MLA’s, including Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Baljinder Kaur, Kulwant Singh Pandori, Jai Kishan Rori and Manjit Singh Bilaspur have demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
Ministry of Home Affairs sought a report from Delhi Police on the Mukherjee Nagar incident. Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy said on Twitter that he spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik regarding the incident, sought a detailed report and “instructed for immediate action.”
The video of the incident is doing the rounds.
“We are taking up the issue of police brutality against innocent Sikhs in Delhi on Sunday at the highest level. This is a disgraceful and unforgivable act. We will ensure that the guilty are brought to book,” Mr. Badal said.
Later in the day, a BJP delegation led by R.P. Singh met Mr. Reddy at the latter’s North Block office regarding the incident.
AAP legislators said the Centre government should immediately intervene in the matter and secure justice for the victims.
