The Railway Board has asked the Northern railway to probe the increased number of referrals for two hospitals — Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, Faridabad and Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket — in comparison to other referral hospitals.

“This aspect needs to be examined to ascertain the circumstances under which referrals were made only to these hospitals,” noted the letter addressed to the general manager [vigilance], Northern railway dated February 12.

Shortcomings in report

The direction has come based on the investigation report of the Northern railway vigilance which was submitted to the Railway Board.

The Board observed that there were certain shortcomings in the report and sought a report with views/recommendations of the authorities.

The Board has also sought to scrutinise the extant procedure for empanelment of hospitals to ensure that the procedure is fair and transparent.

“The process of referring patients to these hospitals should be examined,” the letter notes.

It further adds that the reason of the changing of referral hospital’s name against the consent of patients/relative by the medical officers, in violation of the Railway Board’s letter issued last year, should be investigated along with the role and responsibility of the officials/officers involved in this irregularity.
