All primary schools will be closed and outdoor activity for students of class VI onwards will be stopped on Wednesday, the Delhi government said on Tuesday as pollution levels rose to the ‘severe’ category.

Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia said that all primary schools, from nursery till class V, would be closed on Wednesday.

He added that the government may extend this measure if pollution levels remained severe.

“We appeal to the people of Delhi not to burn any crop residue, coal or wood,” he said, adding that any increase in emissions at this point would be dangerous.

When asked about measures to control dust and vehicular emissions like mechanised sweeping of roads and odd-even plan, Mr. Sisodia said the government was preparing for strict measures.

With levels of particulate matter increasing, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a review meeting of the Health, Environment and Education departments on Tuesday.
