January 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A Delhi Police head constable and a home guard were brutally assaulted with sticks and rods allegedly by a group of young men they had stopped for checking at a police picket in Seelampur here in the early hours of Monday.

According to the police, the suspects had also fired a few rounds, but the bullets missed the targets.

The assailants, who were in a car, had not been identified till Monday evening. “Head constable Dharmveer and home guard Bunty were manning the picket right in front of Seelampur Metro Station. Around midnight they stopped a Swift Dzire car which had a black film on,” said a police officer.

On being questioned, four men aboard the car entered into an argument with them. “Dharmveer tried to pull the occupants out of the car but they drove away. Bunty then chased the vehicle, but they managed to drive away,” said the officer.

Nearly an hour later, the men returned in a new car and with one more accomplice. “This time they were armed with iron rods. One of them hit Dharmveer’s head with a rod while another fired a few rounds. They again assaulted Dharmveer and Bunty before driving away,” said the officer.

The police rushed the injured duo to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. While Dharmveer got 17 stitches on his head, Bunty was discharged after receiving first aid, said the police. A case has been registered.
