A mental illness could have led Neena Rawal, the woman who sent the PM’s security into a tizzy on Wednesday, to weave a story around harassment, claimed her interrogators.
The conclusion was arrived at after police received a medical report and spoke to Ms. Rawal’s parents. It has emerged that she has been suffering from schizophrenia since a year. Her parents clarified that she had not told them about being eve-teased. Ms. Rawal’s claims that the local police failed to act on her complaint were allegedly unfounded as her parents say she never approached the authorities. Having completed her BBA, she lives with her parents in Jhandapur in Ghaziabad’s Sahibabad. “She told us she was going to attend a computer class,” said her mother. Instead, Ms. Rawal took the Metro to reach the South Block.
The drama began when the PM’s route was being cleared. Ms. Rawal refused to oblige. Since there were no women police personnel around, the male personnel tried to block her.
“Conscious that the miscreant was a woman, the policemen did their best to keep her in check,” said a senior police officer. Things turned ugly when she overturned three barricades and broke a flowerpot. Luckily policewomen were at the scene before the PM’s cavalcade. Later, Ms. Rawal was taken to the Parliament Street police station. Speaking to the media after her detention, she said she wasn’t getting her samman (respect). She was allowed to return home on Wednesday evening.
