People had been waiting for this for 70 years: BJP

Celebrations broke out at the Delhi BJP headquarters here on Monday even as proceedings related to the withdrawal of special status to Jammu and Kashmir were going on in Parliament.

‘Historic decision’

Terming it a historic move, State unit chief Manoj Tiwari and other senior party members exchanged sweets amid sloganeering praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “People of all communities and religions are congratulating each other and showing the sentiment of one nation, great nation. We also congratulate the political parties both inside and outside the Parliament who have supported this Bill,” said Mr. Tiwari.

He also said several persons have been waiting for the amendment of Article 370 for 70 years but “no government had enough courage to do so”.

“I have no words to express my feelings on this historic decision of the Modi government. There is a patriotic atmosphere in the entire country. Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh have now become part of mainstream development with this decision. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had raised the slogan: ‘ek desh mein do nishaan, do pradhaan aur do vidhaan nahi chalenge (there cannot be two Constitutions, two Prime Ministers and two flags in one nation)’. He had sacrificed his life. Today the Modi government has fulfilled his dream,” Mr. Tiwari added.
