A day after Delhi University (DU) released its second cut-off list, Swati Singh and her father stood outside Dyal Singh College on Lodhi Road squinting their eyes and trying to read a document on their mobile phone.
They were attempting to comprehend the course structure of the B.A. (Programme) course, which Swati has made the cut-off for. But the two were unable to understand the exact area of study in the course.
A student volunteer finally came to their help and said that the course was the best for Swati, who wanted to dedicate time to coaching classes after college hours so that she could pursue an MBA course. She was also unsure of what subject she wanted to study at her graduation level.
Highest cut-off
DU’s B.A. (Programme) has steadily gained popularity owing to its flexibility on choice of subject combinations. Over one lakh have applied for the course this year.
Lady Shri Ram College has announced the highest cut-off at 98.75% for the course.
“There are several reasons why B.A. (Programme) has gained popularity. It allows you to study a combination of subjects, which broadens its scope. It is the only course where different colleges offer different combinations. It is also a popular course among UPSC aspirants as it helps you study two subjects in depth,” said Harinder Singh, Associate Professor at Hindu College.
Mr. Singh also said the course offers skill enhancement and general elective subjects, which are vocational in nature.
The course has several applicants as the area of study is wide enough to allow them to explore at least two subjects at the undergraduate level.
“B.A. (Programme) opens the door to a wide range of career options. Since it has a wider scope, it broadens the horizons of your knowledge. It not only helps you in clearing civil service exams but also enables you to get a grip over various fields such as economics, politics etc., which makes an official more efficient,” said Sakshi, an applicant for B.A. (Programme) in Hansraj College.
“B.A. Programme is a very dynamic course. It is a good course for those looking forward to writing civil services examination. Apart from subjects like economics and political science, which are important for civil services examination, another major factor is that the course is convenient for balancing with your preparation for the UPSC,” said Niharika, a student of B.A. (Programme) at Hindu College, who is currently preparing for her civil services examination.
