Delhiites woke up to heavy rain on Friday that led to waterlogging and traffic jams across the city during morning rush hour. The city received 3.7 mm of rainfall before 8.30 a.m., and 24.2 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.
Waterlogging was reported in seven areas of north Delhi, including Mall Road, Jahangirpuri, New Rajinder Nagar, Lakkar Mandi, East Patel Nagar and New Rohtak Road. In east Delhi, Sonia Vihar, Shiv Vihar, Main Wazirabad Road, East Rohtash Nagar, Akshardham Road and Geeta Colony, witnessed waterlogging.
Delhi Traffic Police’s Twitter handle was busy all morning sending out alerts telling motorists which areas to avoid. The heavy rain also caused structural damage. A wall of a school in Civil Lines zone reportedly collapsed.
There were also reports that a house collapsed in Sitaram Bazaar, as well as one in Sadar Bazar.
The maximum temperature on Friday was recorded at 32.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.
The minimum was 27.2 degrees Celsius. The humidity level hovered between 77% and 100%.
The Meteorological Department has forecast cloudy sky with one or two spells of moderate to heavy rainfall likely to occur on Saturday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain the same.
