NSUI protests on metro tracks, disrupts services

Demands fare concession for students

Members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Monday halted a train on the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line, demanding fare concession for students.

The protesters raised slogans from the tracks at Vishwavidyalaya metro station and bocked train movement. Further, the protesters demanded metro passes for Delhi University students.

A DMRC spokesperson said, “Around 10-12 protesters came on the tracks at Vishwavidyalaya metro station today at 12.26 p.m. They were quickly removed from the tracks and handed over to police at 12.48 p.m.”

NSUI member Akshay Lakra said, “While Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate metro services in Ahmedabad today. However, Delhi Metro is the costliest under the BJP government’s tenure.”

Services resumes

The DMRC spokesperson added that services on the Yellow Line have been resumed. “Train services were regulated during this period and are running normal on the entire Yellow line stretch,” said the spokesperson. The protesters were detained and brought to Kashmere Gate metro police station, said another spokesperson. The protesters were booked under the Delhi Metro Act and were released only after signing surety bonds, he added.
