No reason to cheer, say Jewar victims

Month after gang-rape, kin stay away from Id celebrations citing ‘shoddy’ probe

The family of the Jewar gang-rape victims had a painful Id as the incident completed a month without any arrests in the case.

Villagers gathered to console the family, which rued that there had been no headway in the case.

“This Id, a pall of gloom has descended upon us. We have no reason to cheer as the criminals are roaming scot-free,” said the husband of one of the victims.

Protest called off

The family had even planned to hold a protest on Monday, but later called it off.

Another family member said that despite the victims being shown many photographs of suspects, no arrests had been made.

“It is difficult for the victims to identify the accused as it was extremely dark at the time of the incident. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has promised a private job in a factory for the eldest son of our family, but we want a government job for him,” he said.

Police teams continue to visit the family, and did so even on Monday. Meanwhile, many Muslims wore black bands to protest against the Ballabgarh incident and a similar incident in Alwar during Id prayers offered at Bilaspur idgah on Monday.

‘Differences created’

“We are unhappy with the environment created by some groups in the name religion. Lives are being claimed in the name of eating habits. Each religion has equal space in the democracy,” said Kadir Khan, a resident of Bilaspur.
